Sports Headlines–7/15/2016

College Station High School grad McGregor Hines pitched seven strong innings last night to lead the Brazos Valley Bombers to a 7 to nothing shut out of the Texas Marshals on the road. Hines allowed only two hits as the starter in last night’s game. The Bombers will play the Marshals again tonight in Plano.

The press at the SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama has picked the Texas A&M football team to finish in fourth place in the Western Division this fall. Alabama is picked to finish first, followed by LSU and Ole Miss. Tennessee is the pick to finish first in the Eastern Division.

The Denver Broncos has offered to guarantee $70-million of a six-year $114.5-million deal for former Texas A&M player and Super Bowl MVP Von Miller. Miller has agreed to the total money of the package but was holding out for more guaranteed money. If Miller accepts, it will become the largest payday for a non-quarterback in NFL history.

The major league baseball season resumes today with the Houston Astros playing the opener of a three-game series in Seattle and the Texas Rangers playing the first of three games in Chicago with the Cubs. Texas begins the second half of the season in first place in the American League West with Houston is second place five-and-a-half games behind.

Sports Headlines–7/14/2016

The Brazos Valley Bombers go for their 12th straight win tonight in Plano when they play the Texas Marshals. The Bombers, who won the first half of the Texas Collegiate League schedule, are undefeated and in first place in the second half standings.

Even though Texas A&M’s day at the SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama was over on Tuesday, the Aggies were still being talked about yesterday. Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema says despite the frustrations suffered by the Razorbacks against the Aggies in recent years it is still fun to play Texas A&M. Alabama head coach Nick Saban says for the first time in many years the Crimson Tide is heading into a season with question marks at the running back position. The Aggies will play Arkansas on September 24th and Alabama on October 22nd.

Sports Headlines–7/13/2016

Texas A&M took the center stage at SEC Media Days yesterday in Hoover, Alabama. Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin answered a question about Oklahoma quarterback transfer Tervor Knight by saying that his experience with the Sooners will give him maturity to step in and help the Aggies immediately. Sumlin was also asked if he has been in contact with Johnny Manziel which Sumlin confirmed. Wide receiver Ricky Seals-Jones told the media that he knows he is considered one of the team leaders because he was asked to appear at the media days. The Aggies will play their season opener against UCLA on September 3rd.

The American League won the mid-summer classic All-Star Game last night for the fourth straight year. The American League beat the National League in San Diego last night 4 to 2.

Sports Headlines–7/12/2016

The Brazos Valley Bombers keep on winning. The Bombers won their 11th straight game last night when they scored three runs in the seventh inning and another three runs in the eighth innings to stun the Acadiana Cane Cutters 6 to 5. The Bombers are in first place in the Texas Collegiate League standings and undefeated in the second half part of the schedule. The Bombers are off until Friday when they will play at the Texas Marshals.

The annual S-E-C Media Days began yesterday in Hoover, Alabama, with S-E-C Commissioner Greg Sankey saying the conference must elevate itself above the off-field issues of the past year. Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin is scheduled to meet with the media today.

Tim Duncan announced his retirement from pro basketball yesterday. The San Antonio Spurs veteran is hanging it up after 19 seasons with the team. While playing for the Spurs, Duncan won five NBA championships, three NBA Finals MVP awards, two league MVP awards, and led the Spurs into the play-off for all 19 seasons. The Spurs are the only pro team Duncan has ever played for.

Sports Headlines–7/11/2016

The Brazos Valley Bombers have a ten game winnings streak going after a sweep in The Woodlands over the Strykers 4 to 2 and 6 to 4 and a win at home last night over the Acadiana Cane Cutters, 13 to 4. The Bombers will host the Cane Cutters again tonight at Nutrabolt Field.

The Houston Astros head into the All-Star break with a series split with the Oakland A’s. The Astros won on Friday 10 to 9, lost on Saturday 3 to 2 and won in 10-innings yesterday 2 to 1. But, the Texas Rangers lost their series with the Minnesota Twins winning on Friday 6 to 5, losing on Saturday 8 to 6, and losing again yesterday 15 to 5. The Rangers currently lead the Astros in the American League West by five-and-a-half games.

Andy Murray won his second Wimbledon men’s singles championship yesterday with a 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 win over Milos Raonic. Serena Williams won her 22nd Grand Slam event Saturday when she won the Wimbledon women’s single championship 7-6, 6-3 over Angelique Kerber.

Sports Headlines–7/8/2016

The Brazos Valley Bombers were winners again last night as former Bryan High pitcher Wily Amador struck out eight batters over five innings on the way to a 3 to 2 victory over the Victoria Generals. The Bombers are in The Woodlands tonight to play the Strykers.

Rudder High School has a new baseball coach. Former Rudder assistant coach Chase Sanford is returning to Bryan to take over as head coach for Matt Harbin who left Rudder to become the head coach at Little Elm. Sanford is leaving the head coaching job at Rosebud-Lott to return to Rudder.

The Houston Astros lost the first game of their long four game series with the Oakland A’s last night 3 to 1. A’s starter Rich Hill equaled his season high of ten strike outs during his six innings on the mound. The Astros will host the A’s again tonight in Houston.

The Texas Rangers were pummeled by the Minnesota Twins last night 10 to 1. The Rangers have now lost seven times out of their last nine games. The Rangers and Twins will play again tonight in Arlington.

Sports Headlines–7/7/2016

Former College Station High School star McGregor Hines struck out seven batters over six innings last night to lead the Brazos Valley Bombers to a 1 to nothing win on the road over the Victoria Generals. The Bombers and Generals will play again tonight in Victoria.

Texas A&M freshman Trey Jimmerson was named yesterday as the Texas Collegiate League player of the week. Jimmerson, playing for the Acadiana Cane Cutters, was 9 for 15 at the plate last week with five RBI’s, four runs scored, and one steal. He leads the TCL in batting with a .389 average.

A&M Consolidated High School named a new head boys basketball coach. Thirman Dimery takes over for Rick German who retired at the end of last year. Dimery had been an assistant coach under German for the past three years.

The Houston Astros completed a sweep of the Seattle Mariners yesterday. Luis Valbuena hit a tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning last night to give the Astros the 9 to 8 win. The Astros host the Oakland A’s tonight for the first game of a four game series.

Texas starter Martin Perez gave up 11 runs in the first four innings yesterday as the Rangers lost to the Red Sox in Boston 11 to 6. The Rangers return home to Arlington tonight to host the Minnesota Twins for the first game of a four game series.

Sports Headlines–7/6/2016

The Brazos Valley Bombers kept on rolling last night as they beat the visiting Victoria Generals 7 to 1. The teams will remain the same, but the location will flip-flop tonight as the Bombers travel to Victoria for the first of two more games with the Generals.

Luis Valbuena, Colby Rasmus and rookie A-J Reed all hit home runs last night to back up Dallas Keuchel for his 6th win of the season as the Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners 5 to 2. The Astros and Mariners will finish their series tonight at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Shin-Soo Choo launched a lead-off homer in Boston last night and launched the Texas Rangers to their first win in four games. The Rangers beat the Red Sox 7 to 2. The Ranger and Red Sox will wrap-up their series today in Boston.

And, with the current merry-go-round of players in the NBA switching teams, one player who is staying put in Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki yesterday agreed to a two-year extension to his contract with the Dallas Mavericks worth $40-million. The extension will allow Nowitzki to reach the 20-year mark playing for the Mavericks if he remains healthy.

Sports Headlines–7/5/2016

The Brazos Valley Bombers provided plenty of fireworks before the fireworks yesterday when they smacked five doubles to beat the visiting Victoria Generals 10 to 2. The Bombers will host the Generals again tonight at 7:05 pm.

The Houston Astros got seven strong innings and 10 strike outs from starting pitcher Lance McCullers along with a game winning homer from George Springer yesterday to beat the visiting Seattle Mariners 2 to 1. The Astros and Mariners will play again tonight in Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Texas Rangers pitchers gave up 13 extra base hits yesterday on the way to a 12 to 5 loss to the Red Sox in Boston. The Rangers are currently without three of their starting pitchers due to injuries. The Rangers and Red Sox will play again tonight in Beantown.

Former University of Texas basketball star Kevin Durant will put on a uniform other than for the Oklahoma City Thunder for the first time in his career next season. The free agent announced yesterday he will sign on Thursday with the Golden State Warriors. Durant is expected to make $54-million over the next two seasons with the Warriors.

Sports Headlines–7/1/2016

The Brazos Valley Bombers gave themselves a little breathing room at the top of the Texas Collegiate League standings last night with a 7 to nothing road win over the Acadiana Cane Cutters. Former College Station High School star McGregor Hines allow five hits during six shut-out innings and struck out seven batters to get the win. The Bombers stay in Louisiana to play the Cane Cutters again tonight.

If Johnny Manziel ever signs with a team and plays in the NFL again he will be facing a four game suspension. The league handed down the punishment yesterday for Manziel violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. The league says Manziel could still face more discipline depending on the outcome of his domestic violence case in Dallas. Manziel has declined to comment on the punishment.

The Houston Astros are back in action tonight as they begin a weekend series against the Chicago White Sox at Minute Maid Park.

The Texas Rangers lost 2 to 1 yesterday to the New York Yankees on a bottom of the ninth passed ball. The loss gave the Rangers a split of their four game series in New York. The Rangers are in Minnesota tonight to begin a weekend series with the Twins.

Cinderella won the College Baseball National Championship yesterday. Coastal Carolina beat Arizona 4 to 3 to win their first national championship in any sport.
