Local News Headlines–4/26/2013

The 12 first responders who lost their lives in the West explosion were honored at a memorial service Thursday.  Honored were Kevin Williams Sanders, Morris Bridges Jr., William “Buck” Uptmor, Joey Pustejovsky, Perry Calvin, Jimmy Matus, Kenneth Harris, Douglas Snokhous, Robert Snokhous, Cody Dragoo, Jerry Dane Chapman, and Cyrus Adam Reed who were all killed in the explosion.  The crowd was so large people were turned away from the Ferrell Center at Baylor University 45 minutes before the start of the service.

For almost 20 years, spring cleaning has included the opportunity to dispose of household products without putting them in the landfill.  Tomorrow is the next household hazardous waste collection event.  Leftover paint, motor oil, and car batteries are a few of the items that will be collected.  Bryan Griespach with the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency says the drop off site is the University Services building off Harvey Road east of Veterans Park.

And, as tensions increase over delayed flights across the country that are attributed to sequestration, Congressman Bill Flores says he is taking measures to get things going in the right direction.  Flores visited Afghanistan this past weekend on a Congressional delegation trip to look at issues regarding the transition and budget impact of the sequester on the military efforts against terrorism.
