EASTERWOOD AIRPORT MIGHT NOT HAVE TO CLOSE ITS TOWER AS SOON AS EXPECTED, THANKS TO POTENTIAL FUNDS FROM TXDOT.  SPOKESMAN MARK CROSS SAYS NEXT THURSDAY MORNING, THE STATE’S TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION WILL DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR TEXAS’ MUNICIPAL AIRPORTS THREATENED WITH CLOSURES BY WASHINGTON’S WITHDRAWAL OF SUPPORT.  CROSS SAYS THE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION WILL HOLD AN EMERGENCY MEETING TO CONSIDER SPENDING ABOUT $7-MILLION.  IF APPROVED, THE STATE WILL PICK UP THE TAB FOR THE FIRST 90 DAYS OF TOWER OPERATION AT EASTERWOOD AND 12 OTHER AIRPORTS.

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY ON THE JOB FOR A&M POLICE CHIEF ELMER SCHNEIDER.  HE SPOKE AT LAST NIGHT’S COLLEGE STATION CITY COUNCIL MEETING AFTER RECEIVING A PROCLAMATION FOR HIS CAREER, THANKING THE COUNCIL FOR THEIR SPIRIT OF COOPERATION OVER THE YEARS.  SCHNEIDER JOINED U-P-D WHILE ATTENDING SCHOOL THEN STARTED FULL-TIME IN 1971.  A RETIREMENT RECEPTION WILL BE HELD NEXT FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT THE GEORGE BUSH PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY.
